What is Sandboxie?

Sandboxie Sandboxie is a program that creates a separate area, or sandbox, for running applications on Windows, isolated from the actual operating system. The principle of operation is that when a program is run through Sandboxie, all changes made by that program, whether writing files, modifying the registry, or installing components, are confined within the sandbox and do not affect the actual system in any way. When the sandbox is closed, everything that happened inside is deleted, leaving the actual system clean as if the program had never been run.

Sandboxie is popular among users who want to test files or programs they are unsure of their safety, such as files downloaded from the internet, unfamiliar programs, or even malware that security analysts want to study. It can also be used to open a web browser in a sandbox to prevent malicious websites from embedding code onto the machine.

Another popular use case among Thai users is using Sandboxie to open multiple windows of the same program or game simultaneously, or to play with multiple IDs. Normally, most programs and games only allow one window to be open at a time per device because the system considers them as the same program. However, when run through separate Sandboxie windows, the system sees them as different programs, allowing you to open multiple game IDs or log in to multiple accounts simultaneously on a single device. Each window runs independently without interfering with the others. This is ideal for people who play multiple characters, farm in-game, or need to log in to multiple chat and social media apps at the same time.

Originally, Sandboxie was shareware software developed by a private company. It changed hands several times before Sophos, the then-owner, open-sourced its code in 2020, allowing the community to maintain it. This made Sandboxie a free program available to everyone without charge ever since.

What is Sandboxie Plus?

After Sandboxie became open source, developer David Xanatos took over the project and split it into two versions that share the same core. This means both versions have identical levels of security and compatibility. The only differences are the program's interface and the features accessed through the user interface.

Sandboxie Classic This is the original version that retains the old look and feel using the MFC UI. Users familiar with the original Sandboxie will find it immediately recognizable. However, this version does not include any new features. Features added after open-source development must be configured manually via the Sandboxie.ini file.

Sandboxie Plus This is a newer version that uses a more modern Qt UI. It supports all new features added after the project became open source, accessible directly through the interface without needing to modify configuration files. These include a Snapshot Manager for backing up sandbox states, an automated triggering system based on different states, a troubleshooting wizard, and the ability to limit memory or the number of processes in each sandbox. For general users, Sandboxie Plus is recommended as it offers more comprehensive features and is easier to use.

Sandboxie Plus is a freemium platform, meaning almost all features are free to use. Only a few optional features (mostly not necessary for general use) require purchasing a Supporter Certificate to unlock, which also supports the project's development.
