Getting to know GRAPHISOFT Archicad

GRAPHISOFT Archicad This is an architectural design software used by architects from the initial sketches to the final construction drawings. The program operates on the concept of a virtual building; therefore, every component drawn is not just a two-dimensional image, but an element of the building with built-in data. Walls have their material and thickness, and doors and windows have precise dimensions and locations. When plans, floor plans, elevations, sections, and 3D renderings are modified, they adjust simultaneously without needing to redraw each sheet individually.

A key strength of Archicad lies in its BIM (Building Information Modeling) functionality. Architects start with floor plans and add walls, columns, beams, stairs, and roofs. The program stores all the information about those components, including their dimensions, materials, and quantities. When it's time to create a bill of quantities or window and door schedules, this information can be readily retrieved without needing to recount or remeasure. This significantly reduces discrepancies between the drawings and the specifications.

Archicad's design tools are flexible enough to handle projects of many sizes, from residential homes to office buildings, hotels, and large-scale projects. Users can create freeform shapes, adjust complex roof slopes, design staircases to fit the actual space, or experiment with interior layouts and see the results in 3D immediately. Pre-built objects like doors, windows, and furniture can be resized and their properties adjusted as needed without having to recreate them every time. Presentations can also be done within the same program, including realistic views and print-ready layouts.

Collaboration is another aspect that Archicad emphasizes, because in real building projects, there's never just one architect. The program supports teamwork on the same model, where each member reserves their own area of responsibility and submits changes back and forth without overlapping with teammates' work. Furthermore, it allows for information exchange with engineers and contractors using open standards like IFC, making models from the program... Autodesk Revit This allows for easy checking and coordination without the need for multiple file conversions.

Archicad integrates drafting, 3D modeling, construction documentation, and coordination in one place. Users can see their buildings grow floor by floor in the same model, from the first line on the floor plan to the final set of drawings ready to be delivered to the contractor.

Who is this program suitable for?

Archicad is designed specifically for building design. Architects who manage projects from initial sketches to construction drawings will find it incredibly useful. Engineers and building teams who need to coordinate with architects can also work on the same models without needing to convert files back and forth. Whether it's a small studio working on residential projects or a large team tackling high-rise buildings and hospitals, this tool suite supports both scales of work.

Key Features

Create a building model.

  • Parametric building components. The tool automatically adjusts the relationship between walls, floors, roofs, columns, and beams; fixing just one point causes the entire project to adjust accordingly.
  • Smart object. Doors, windows, stairs, railings, and curtain walls are highly customizable, supporting complex designs without the need to start from scratch.
  • Structural model. Create and analyze load-bearing components on-site, and generate constantly updated Structural Analytical Models for engineers to use in their work.
  • MEP system work. Design, drafting, and documentation of air conditioning, plumbing, and electrical systems within a single architectural model, including cross-disciplinary conflict detection.
  • Design Options. Try out multiple design options in a single project file, either for the entire building or specific zones, and then integrate the chosen options into the main model.
  • PARAM-O. Create your own parametric objects using the node-based tool without writing GDL code, then save them as regular Archicad objects for immediate use.
  • Point Cloud. Import .e57 or .xyz scanned files to use as reference points for renovation and surveying work, then build the model over the actual measured data.
  • Rhino-Grasshopper Live Connection. Export shapes from Grasshopper as BIM parts in Archicad in a two-way manner; modifications to one side will automatically adjust the other side without needing to transfer files back and forth.

Prepare supporting documentation.

  • A coordinated set. Plans, sections, elevations, and detail drawings pull data from the same 3D model; once the model is modified, all drawings are updated simultaneously.
  • Enter the description only once. Add the labeling once, and Archicad will maintain the accuracy of the design every time it changes, eliminating the need to edit each sheet individually.
  • Data in the model. Add intelligent metadata to parts, check for compliance with defined standards, and seamlessly transfer the information to other teams for further use.

Display and present images.

  • AI Visualizer. Transform conceptual models into near-realistic images with the power of the cloud. No additional installation is required, and it doesn't consume excessive system resources.
  • Multiple styles in one device. Create sketches, white-out models, or realistic renderings, along with fly-throughs and animations to visualize the design concept for the client.
  • Connect to the rendering program. It integrates Enscape, Twinmotion, and D5 for real-time rendering, while the built-in rendering engine is Redshift.
  • BIMx. Transform your model into an interactive presentation, viewable on desktop, mobile, or Apple Vision Pro, complete with all included data and documentation.

Collaborate and exchange information.

  • BIMcloud Teamwork. Multiple people work on the same model simultaneously in real-time. The system automatically synchronizes changes and manages versions, reducing work conflicts between teams.
  • Inspect the collision point. Perform clash detection and track cross-project issues between BIMx and Archicad to identify problems before deployment.
  • Autodesk Forma Connection. Transferring project models and data between Archicad and Forma in their original formats allows teams across different platforms to continue analyzing the work without file conversion.
  • OPEN BIM and IFC. Exchange models with other software applications using the open IFC standard, and coordinate with infrastructure and systems teams without being tied to a single vendor.

What's new?

Version 30.0.0

  • AI Visualizer. Choose from several new AI imaging models, including the Nano Banana Pro, for sharper and more accurate images.
  • Dark Mode on Windows. You can now change the program's interface to a dark theme, making it easier on the eyes to work at night.
  • Arrange the viewpoints in the Project Map. Create your own folders in Navigator, drag and drop viewpoints, and arrange them as needed. This makes finding viewpoints easier, even for large projects.
  • Show on Stories of the Wall. You can now more precisely customize the wall display, choosing whether to show the wall above or below Home Story.
  • stairs. Finishes can be toggled on and off per view. Set components as Core, Finish, or Other to allow the Partial Structure Display to show as desired.
  • Doors and windows. Configure various panels via a direct clickable preview, allowing for easier selection and editing in the INT library.
  • Search for Property. The search fields in Tool Settings and Info Box offer filtering and grouping of results, and support custom properties.
  • Dimension lines. Witness line and extension line adjustments are more flexible, with individual point styling options and improved markings, including elevation dimensions.
  • Label frame shape. Added a new autotext frame shape and adjusted the ellipse shape names to be consistent.
  • Keynote Legend. Limiting vertical height, improving word wrapping, and optimizing graphics for easier readability in multi-unit layouts.
  • New Project Info interface. Group project data yourself, drag and drop to organize, edit in-line, and search from one place.
  • Autodesk Forma Connection. Securely exchange models, documentation, and project data with Autodesk Forma in its native format.
  • IFC. Importing IFC4x3 is more comprehensive, and exporting data by mapping it to IfcSpatialZone for zones, morphs, and classified parts is possible.
  • Exchanging information with Revit 2026. Import RFA files by selecting the desired family type; there's no need to import the entire family set.
  • ProKit. The original productivity enhancement toolset, known as CI Tools, is included in the ProKit package to help document and manage end-of-project changes.
