Example of use
Architectural work uses SketchUp Pro to create building models from rough massing blocks to fully detailed drawings. Sections can be cut to show rooms and internal structures, real-time shadows and sunlight can be added, and these can then be further developed into construction drawings in Layout without needing to transfer files to other programs.
Interior design involves placing furniture and materials in the room and immediately showing clients different areas. Landscape architecture involves arranging plants, pathways, and adjusting ground levels based on the actual terrain. Woodwork and product design involve creating prototypes, measuring components, and then sending designs to craftsmen for production.
What can SketchUp Pro do?
3D modeling
- Push/Pull. Pulling a flat cross-section into a 3D shape or pushing it back in is the fastest way to shape walls, floors, and design boxes.
- Follow me. Drag the cross-section along the path to create moldings, railings, and curved pieces that cannot be drawn with ordinary tools.
- Procedures. The new Follow Me, Solid Tools, and Copy Along tools save your workflow for later editing. Changing the profile or dimensions will allow the model to adjust accordingly without needing to rebuild it.
- Copy Along. Place duplicate copies of groups or components along a path; spacing can be adjusted later. Suitable for tasks requiring duplicate items to be placed in rows.
- Solid Tools. Cut, drill, and merge solid shapes using Boolean, then save the steps for later editing. Keep the tags and classification data of the workpiece intact.
- Section Fill Hatches. Apply a hatch pattern to a cross-section of a solid to technically separate material layers. Manage patterns from Hatch Patterns, Entity Info, Materials, or Styles.
- Materials and Styles. Paint and apply material textures to the model's surface. Adjust the overall look of the work using Styles for lines, edges, and shading.
- Shadows and light. Create real-time shadow simulations to observe how sunlight hits the building before making decisions about openings and eaves.
Model organization
- Groups and Components. Separate the work into groups; modify a single component, and all copies will update simultaneously across the entire model.
- Tags. Toggle the visibility of parts by category without touching the geometry. No matter how complex the part, you can still find it.
- Outliner. In this version, the model structure can be viewed as a tree, and items can be arranged hierarchically or by tags.
- Scenes. Record the camera angles, style, and perspective of each scene for presentations or to create a step-by-scene animated storytelling project.
- Section Planes. Cut out a model and view the interior in live, seeing the material layers and internal structure without having to delete any parts.
- Add Location. Import maps and topographic data to plot models on real-world locations, supporting Coordinate Reference Systems and project coordinates.
2D documents using LayOut
- Layout. Extract the model to create 2D plans, diagrams, and documents to scale. Add dimensions, descriptions, and stamps. Edit the model and update the layout in LayOut accordingly.
- Draw Mode. Sketch to scale on the unlimited space in LayOut. Draw at full scale first, then arrange it on the page later.
- Image Adjustments. You can adjust the brightness, contrast, color, and opacity of an image directly in the Layout viewport without needing to open image editing software.
- Hidden Line Rendering. The new engine generates vector lines much faster for complex models. Vector models in LayOut are completed more quickly while maintaining the same sharpness of the lines.
Work repository, collaboration, and development.
- 3D Warehouse. Search for and download models, materials, and Live Components created by others to use as a starting point, saving time on general sculpting.
- AutoFit Live Components. Drag and drop a Live Component onto the skin surface, and it will automatically resize and adjust its direction to fit the skin.
- Dynamic Components. Create parametric, customizable objects such as doors, windows, and furniture. Resize them, and the components will adjust accordingly.
- Trimble Connect. Store models on the cloud, share them with your team so they can view and comment from anywhere without having to send files back and forth.
- Extension Warehouse. Install specialized extensions for rendering, analysis, and BIM integration without changing the main program.
- Pre-design. Reviewing climate and site context data before starting to create a model will help in deciding on building orientation and openings from the outset.
- Import and export files. Exchange files with other programs in DWG, DXF, IFC, USD, FBX, OBJ, STL, DAE, and 3DS formats, depending on the format supported by each program.
- SketchUp for Web and iPad. You can open the model further on a browser or iPad using the same Pro suite. Your work isn't limited to one device.
- Ruby API. Automate repetitive tasks by writing scripts, or create your own tools that extend the APIs provided by the developers.

- Gain greater control over DWG and DXF files. Added DWG/DXF import and export options, improved the IFC and TrimBIM workflows to be more aligned, and enhanced USD support.
- Support for Macs using Intel chips has been discontinued. SketchUp 2027 requires Apple silicon on a Mac.
- Adjust the image in Layout. Adjust the opacity, brightness, contrast, and color of an image in the viewport without using other software.
- Draw without paper in LayOut. The new Draw Mode lets you sketch to scale on unlimited blank space, focusing on the drawing first and then arranging the page later.
